[Excuse the cross-post from r.r.a.p]

I have been elected as president of our local repeater association.  We have
about 370 members and manage four local repeaters.  The documents that govern
the group (articles of incorporation and by-laws) have been unchanged since
1969.  After filling some vacant offices, the group agreed that our governing
documents must be updated and I lead that committee as well.

I would appreciate any copies of governing documents (constitution, corporate
articles, by-laws, etc) from any other repeater associations or clubs.  The
chance to improve these documents comes all too seldom and we want to do a
good job!

The documents can be emailed (via internet), faxed, snail-mailed in any form
possible.  I will reimburse reasonable first class U.S. postage if so
requested (fax and mail charges are your burden).

Your help is appreciated by the North Alabama Repeater Association!

Well ... sometimes I just don't want to talk to someone ... but that's
usually someone(s) in particular. I always respond to new calls and non-local
calls (or calls I don't recognise. Some people bore me and you can't make
me talk to them! And I monitor my favorite repeater ... By the time I've
heard XYZ tell the seventh person in one day about his or her new HT or
problem at work, I've pretty much got the story down pat ... I won't answer
a `cq' from XYZ right then.

Someone breaking into a qso is another story and Doug makes me think of
several of my pet peeves: The guy that breaks in as says "I don't know
what you were talking about or who it goes to, so who ever it goes to,
take it." (We always turn the frequency over to breaking stations ASAP.)
For god's sake, LISTEN FIRST! Find out what people are talking about and
decide if you want to be a part of _that_ conversation before you push
the PTT. It bugs me when people are talking about NAFTA or "is elvis dead"
or whatever and someone breaks into the middle of it with: "so, I got
a new HT today..." Rarely (but sometimes!) does it work when five people
are talking about three different things. When I gets to five people
talking about five things, I clear out. :-) And of course when someone
new comes in and starts a 2-way with someone leaving the rest of the
group out, that ticks me off too. I don't think a conversation has to go
in strict rotation order, but after two people have gone on for 3 or 4
times, I usualy clear (often having to double with one of them.)

Forget about EM propogation theory and practice (and tuning finals,)
new-comers and OT's, novices and extra's alike might benefit from
some `conversation' theory.

Oh, they're still there, but I think they all hide on 220 and 1.2 gig.

PS: `Clique' repeaters are easy to break. Get five friends and start making
your own Q's on it. (And of course, talk to the new guys that pop up ...)

What a great idea!!  Sometimes even the good and great clubs miss this idea
of having classes on radio operation.  I have had to do mine without much
benefit of Elmers or club classes; but I have read a lot and listened,
listened, listened to many folks on the air.  It is not hard to distinguish
between most of the poor versus the good operating procedures; although
some poor practices can be picked up because a lot of people in a "local"
group operate that way.

When I joined the local club, they have a 30 min session for all new
members prior to the monthly meeting starting, basically to discuss local
repeaters and practices and procedures for them.  Not much for HF at all,
but at least it was a start.  I would encourage more clubs doing this.
Lets start the "WAVE" on this subject.

Subject: Help with Icom W21AT

I'm a new owner of an ICOM W21AT HT.  The "skip" function doesn't seem to
do what I think it should do -- am I misunderstanding the situation?

My goal is to put several "continuously on" frequencies into the memory
channels, and mark those memory channels as "skip" channels.  These would
be such as NOAA Weather, FAA ATIS, etc.  I can put them into memory, mark
the memory channels as "skip", and when the scanning function is working,
the radio stops and receives those channels.  Is this normal, or is my
radio defective?

Masking doesn't seem to be a useful option, because the frequency display
remains blank, and I'd rather not have to unmask and remask several of
those anonymous channels until I find which one I want to listen to for a
minute.

a)Use it on the roof of your car?

b)Drill appropriate hole in roof and install top portion
of antenna onto the firm, non-moving roof mount. Use base to
hold floppy containing your latest backup onto the side of
your metal file-cabinet.

c)OK, I own a mag mount, but I only use it sitting still;
for normal mobile use I rely on my roof mounted NMO 1/4 wave
whips.

 Rain driven dirt gets under the mag mounts, and will
start scratching the paint. So, when you remove the mount,
don't drag it, just slowly rock it until it pops off.
Then clean the bottem of the mount, and the roof, real good.
I put 4 layers of good car wax on that part of the roof before
putting the magnet on the roof.

1)  Remove the mag-mount whenever it is not in use.
2)  Don't always mount it in the same location.  Put it in a different
    spot each time you re-install it.
3)  Be careful not to slide it when removing or installing.  To remove it,
    tilt it first (so only one edge of the magnet is touching) and then
    pull straight up.
4)  Keep the bottom of the magnet clean.  Expecially check for any
    metal filings that can scratch the paint.

 It was assumed, after WWII, that evil missiles from Russia could
be set up to home in on certain radio stations. They could locate
certain cities by knowing the frequency of their major radio
station. There werent a lot of stations in those days. So, in
an alert, ALL broadcast stations wouls shut down, and we would
listen to 640 or 1240 for intructions. They figured, that having
dozens of stations on those 2 frequencies, all over America, that
homing in would be impossible. CONELRAD stood for
CONtrol of ELectromagnetic RADiation, if memory serves me.

Subject: VHF/UHF in Ford SHO Taurus

I am looking for info from anyone who has installed a VHF/UHF radio in a Ford SHO Taurus.
I recently purchased one and I would like to install a radio in it but I have been reading
about some manufacturers not recommending this.  My manual for the Taurus is kind of
vague on the subject of RF equipment and mostly concerned with Cel-Phone stuff.

Basicly I need to know if it has been done and if so how did it work(every thing
functioning normally at full power) or not(did the car  suddenly explode in flames
when the transmitter is keyed).

Add yet another one to the list.  Email me if you would like me to
listen for you on 15m.  I will be using a keyboard to send so as
to not confuse you with my horrible fist (worse than my accent when
I speak English :-), so you will get W1AW quality sending :-).
Don't worry about _your_ fist, I use wetware to copy CW.

Is om AA6AD still reading this list?  Last time he wrote something,
some inconsiderate fellow flamed his spelling, and I haven't seen him
on this newslist since.  He appears on the Novice bands all the
time to work slow morse.  Heard him on again during the CW Sweepstakes
when both of us were working in the Novice bands.

Me too!  I am still rather slow myself (8-10 WPM) and would like to upgrade
so I need the help too.  I've made about 25 CW contacts since my first about
a year ago.  I've been licensed since 1978 so talk about a slow starter!  :-)
Actually, I laid low for about 8 years before dusting off my stuff and
building my first REAL ham shack two years ago.  Boy, am I glad I did, I'm
really having a ball!
